How to Configure Nested Virtualization Using ESXi
In the video below, we show you how to configure nested virtualization on VMware ESXi 7.0
This does work on some of the older versions of ESXi as well though
Nested virtualization allows you to run other hypervisors within a hypervisor
As long as the bare metal server that ESXi runs on has sufficient resources, the performance hit isn’t too noticeble
But in addition to saving you money on hardware, this also allows you to take advantage of snapshots
In other words, you can benefit from virtualization when you wan to trial, test, configure and upgrade hypervisors
As well as requiring virtualisation of the CPU, ESXi does require you to make changes to the virtual switch or port-group in order for VMs on the nested hypervisor to be reachable
Other vendor hypervisors also support this feature, but in this video we show you how to do nested virtualization with esxi
